MALTA CAR HIRE GUIDE

Malta car rental deposit and excess explained

The words deposit, excess and card hold are sometimes used as if they mean the same thing. They describe different parts of a car-rental agreement and should be checked separately.

The online booking deposit

Rental Car Malta collects 10% of the booking total online through Viva Wallet when the booking request is submitted. That payment is credited towards the rental price, leaving the displayed balance due at collection.

Payment does not by itself guarantee a vehicle. The team still reviews availability and confirms or declines the request. Pending bookings that are declined follow the payment-refund process.

The excess and security amount

The excess describes the customer’s potential responsibility under the rental agreement for covered damage. The displayed excess security deposit is the amount handled separately on the driver’s card at collection to support that responsibility.

It is not part of the rental price. The amount depends on the vehicle and is shown on fleet and checkout pages, so compare it before selecting a model. Exclusions and responsibilities remain governed by the signed rental terms.

What happens after the vehicle is returned

The vehicle is inspected according to the rental agreement. If no amount is due, release of a card authorisation is initiated; the time until funds become available can depend on the card provider and bank.

Keep collection and return records, including photographs and any signed inspection documents, until the security transaction has been resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 10% booking deposit refundable?+

Refund handling depends on booking status and the applicable cancellation decision. Pending bookings declined by the rental team are refunded; confirmed-booking cancellations are reviewed separately.

Is the excess security amount an extra rental fee?+
