MALTA CAR HIRE GUIDE

Debit card car hire in Malta: how it works

A debit card can be used for Rental Car Malta bookings and the collection security arrangement, subject to the confirmed terms. The essential step is to distinguish the rental payment from the excess deposit.

Check dates & prices

The card should belong to the main driver

Bring a physical debit card in the same name as the main driver shown on the confirmation voucher. The name should correspond with the driving licence and identification. Ask the team before travel if the card is prepaid, virtual, digital-only or issued in a different name.

Make sure the card permits international and in-person transactions and has sufficient available funds. Your bank may apply its own authorisation controls even when the rental company accepts the card type.

Booking deposit versus excess security deposit

The 10% online booking deposit is part of the rental price. The remaining rental balance is shown separately. The excess security deposit is not an additional rental charge: it supports the driver’s responsibility under the rental agreement and is handled at collection.

The current excess amount is displayed for each vehicle before booking. Check the vehicle-specific amount instead of relying on a general statement about the fleet.

Prepare before arriving at Malta Airport

Bring the physical card, PIN and required driving documents. If necessary, tell your bank that you will use the card in Malta and confirm any daily authorisation limits.

Read the voucher for the exact collection balance and security-deposit amount. Contact the rental team before your flight if the card or account circumstances change.
