Car hire in Malta without a credit card
Not owning a credit card does not automatically prevent you from hiring a car in Malta. Rental Car Malta accepts debit cards, but the main driver should understand the card and security-deposit conditions before travelling.
Check dates & pricesUse an eligible physical debit card
The payment card must be in the name of the driver shown on the confirmation voucher. Bring the physical card and PIN; a screenshot, wallet-only card or another person’s card may not be suitable for the collection transaction.
Check with the rental team before booking if the card is prepaid, virtual or subject to low authorisation limits. Acceptance by the rental company does not override restrictions applied by the issuing bank.
Keep enough money available for collection
The rental balance and the excess security deposit are separate. The current excess amount is displayed with each vehicle and repeated during checkout. Funds used for a card authorisation may be unavailable for other spending until the issuing bank releases them.
Plan holiday spending around that temporary reduction in available balance. Ask your bank how it treats pre-authorisations and how long releases normally take.
Confirm the complete arrangement
Compare vehicle price, driver-age fees, extras, premium location fee and excess amount. The cheapest headline daily rate is not necessarily the lowest overall commitment.
Keep the approval email and voucher. A request is not confirmed until the rental team approves availability.
